I'm a big fan of Betty Edwards' book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Prior to the mannequin hand still life for fifth graders, (i.e. Eric's drawing above) we practiced blind and controlled contour drawings of other still life objects using the exercises outlined in Edwards' book.
